Heads up!!

The hyperlinked words are Amazon affiliate links. That means, if you choose to buy the item directly from the link I have listed, I may get a percentage of the sale. This comes at no extra cost for you.

I want to help share information about the hobby I love so don't feel like you have to use my links.

I'm just trying to grow the sewing community & my fabric fund... <3

OKAY. You've decided to start learning a lifelong skill. Woo!! I'm so excited for you. I caught the sewing bug about a year ago and I'm never looking back. It now occupies all the free space in my brain and I'm not mad about it.

I'm going to give you the quick run down on what I think you need to get going. But what do you need to establish a solid sewing corner?

Ive listed and linked the basic 10 things I think you need to start sewing projects TODAY.

Well, when the Amazon delivery person drops off your packages...

  1. A Sewing Machine. (This is worthy of a whole post. I'll give you the highlights) In the sewing mode, it is mistake proof... the machine won't let you sew without the presser foot down, it will notify you when bobbin thread is low, and needle speed control!!! It also doubles as a 4"x4" embroidery machine. HOWEVER, you don't need to invest $500 right off the starting line. You can get a great machine to get you started. I linked the brand Brother, but do your own research on the different brands to see if another brand works better for you.

  2. Thread. Here's a variety pack of colors with matching bobbins. I started off with basic white and black thread and was heading to Amazon within a couple projects to buy more. So you'll be ready to work with any color fabric from day one.

  3. Quality Scissors. My favorite brand will always be Fiskars.

  4. Needles. You'll break a few from time to time. The titanium ones seem to be a cool idea. I have some in my cart now.

  5. Pins. The one linked has a nice case. BONUS: check out this magnetic pin holder.

  6. Seam Ripper. You're going to make mistakes and sew something together you were supposed to. We all do it. I also use tweezers to get to small threads out of the way easier. I bought this exact set and use each item almost ever project. We love a bundle.

  7. An Iron. I have a separate one from my normal laundry iron because I don't use the steam function nor have to worry about residual water leaking onto projects. And if you don't have an ironing board, here's a link to a table top one or a wool mat that is what I personally use.

  8. Classic Tape Measure. Nothing fancy but simple & timeless.

  9. Fabric Markers & Chalk. This is helpful to mark straight-lines and seam allowance. I like the chalk personally, but try them all and see what works best for you.

  10. Fabric. I linked this fun retro fat quarter (18"x22" pieces) bundle that will get you going on practice work and beginner projects. But you can use whatever fabric you have lying around the house. I will recommend non-stretch fabric such as quilting cotton for practicing.

Excluding the machine & fabric, all these items will cost: $128.72 (+Tax & shipping if not a Prime Member). We're talking basics, so this total also does not include the extra items I linked in the text. But I think that's a savvy total quality items that hopefully be the only ones you need! (At least for a while.)

Alright 10 items were easy to recommend. And my number 11 item would be:

Cutting Mat and Ruler. I actually found a bundle that includes rotary scissors. Which is a great add to your "craftillary." (My new favorite word I possibly created?)

Do you think I missed an essential? What is a must-have in your craftillary?

  • Pattern Weights

  • Serger

  • Rotary vs Regular Scissors

  • Nailed It!

Welcome to your new obsession. You're in good company.

Like I said above, these are affiliate links which means you don't pay any more than normal and I may receive a small commission from the sale. I hope you use the list recommendations more than the links.
